How to Clean a Pool Filter?

No one wants their private swimming pool to turn into a stinking ditch. Therefore, ensuring the cleanliness and hygiene of the pool water is a problem that all owners must face in the daily use of the pool. Besides manual cleaning and disinfectant application, the role of the pool filter is also crucial. So, what are the common types of pool filters, what do they specifically do, how often do we need to clean them, and how do we clean them?

Several common types of swimming pool filters:

Quartz Sand Filter (Sand Cylinder):

It offers stable performance, convenient maintenance, and low cost but occupies a relatively large area. Depending on the material, it can also be divided into fiberglass quartz sand filters, stainless steel quartz sand filters, etc.

Diatomaceous Earth Filter:

It provides high-precision filtration but is costly, prone to malfunctions, and difficult to maintain.

Gravity Filter (Quartz Sand):

It also offers high-precision filtration but is costly, difficult to repair after malfunction, and has high requirements for the equipment room.

Paper Core Filter: It is simple to operate and clean, suitable for use in small swimming pools.

Integrated Filtration Equipment:

It integrates swimming pool filtration, disinfection, and circulation. By controlling the working hours of the filtration pump, it can filter the pool water to purify it.

The role of a swimming pool filter:

Removing impurities:

The filtration equipment physically removes suspended solids, solid particles, organics, sand, and other impurities from the water, reducing turbidity and enhancing clarity.

Improving water quality:

The filter effectively removes colloidal or particulate organics from the water, reducing the breeding of bacteria and viruses, ensuring water safety and hygiene. Filtration equipment is often used in conjunction with disinfection equipment, where disinfectants kill bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms.

Maintaining chemical balance:

The filter helps maintain the chemical balance of pool water by monitoring and adjusting parameters such as pH, alkalinity, hardness, and dissolved oxygen, ensuring an appropriate chemical environment for the water and preventing excessive or insufficient acidity and alkalinity.

When & how frequently should you clean the filter?

Observe the water flow rate:

If the pool water flow slows down, it may indicate a clogged filter that needs cleaning.

Check the filter pressure gauge:

If the pressure gauge reading continues to rise and exceeds the normal range, it indicates that the filter needs cleaning.

Observe the water quality:

If the water quality deteriorates, appearing turbid or having an odor, it may be due to the filter not effectively filtering, requiring cleaning.

Pay attention to the time cycle:

Depending on the frequency of use and water quality, clean the filter regularly, generally once every quarter or half a year.

Steps for cleaning different types of pool filters:

The method for cleaning a pool filter primarily depends on the type of filter, with common types including sand filters, cartridge filters, and diatomaceous earth (D.E.) filters.

Cartridge Filter:

Turn off the pump and filter system to ensure safety and prevent damage.

Open the air relief valve to release any pressure in the system.

Remove the clamps or screws securing the filter, and then take off the filter cover, as per the user manual.

Carefully remove the cartridge and inspect it for damage. If there are cracks or wear, replace the cartridge.

Gently rinse the cartridge using a water hose with a spray nozzle, avoiding excessively high water pressure to prevent damage to the cartridge.

If the cartridge is very dirty, it can be soaked or cleaned using a dedicated filter cleaner.

Inspect and replace the O-ring, applying an appropriate amount of lubricant if necessary.

Reinstall the cleaned cartridge back into the filter, replace the filter cover, and secure it.

Sand Filters and Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) Filters

For sand filters, the sand media can be cleaned through a backwashing process.

For D.E. filters, specific chemical cleaners may be required for cleaning, and regeneration should be performed as recommended by the manufacturer.
